Generally, we find the top 10 songs of a particular year, top MDs or even the worst 10! This is an attempt to list the other good songs in Tamil which came in 2006 which either did not receive much publicity or were not declared hits by the mass. So here we go...
1. Sutti poove – (kai vandha kalai) – sung by Karthik and Sadhana Sargam, with pretty neat music by Dhina (who is trying to break into the mainstream). A pretty unknown movie, but for being the launch vehicle of Pandiarajan’s son, it went unnoticed and so did the song.
2. Ragasiyamanadhu Kaadhal (Kodambakkam) – With music by Sirpi, who has long been forgotten, this came out trumps with good exposure on the TV chanels. Despite its similarity in patches to Bharadwaj’s “Thozha thozha” from Pandavar Bhoomi, one helluva song with some wonderful country picturisation.
3. Theme music from Uyir – This movie was noticed for its bold theme of a lady coveting her brother-in-law. Though Joshua Sridhar did not live upto his “Kaadhal” expectations as far as the songs are concerned, the theme music was real peppy and a winner
4. Mugile and Poonjolai Kiliye from Aran – Joshua Sridhar again, Aran was a different film set in an Army background. Though Mugile has traces of Rahman’s “Minnale” from May Maadham and “Poonjolai Kiliye” the old “Malayora mayile”, both of them were real good listens
5. Atrai Thingal from Sivapathigaram – Very Vidyasagarish, which is very melodic. Madhu Balakrishnan and Sujatha are in their elements. The song perhaps did not get much publicity because of an ordinary presentation and the film being real pathetic
6. Kaadhal vandhale from vallavan – vallavan by Yuvan Shankar Raja had other winners, notably the mass hit “loosu penne” This was not a song as such, but came as part of the BGM. It was not part of the audio CD too. Peppy nevertheless and well sung by YSR.
7. Mugaliname from Amirtham – With music by “occasional” music director Bhavadharini, this is on the lines of Rahman’s “Azhagana Ratchasiye” though it can get under the guise of being under the same raga – Reetigowlai
8. Sudum Nilavu from Thambi – comments same as 7 above, only changes being Vidyasagar the MD and he is not an “occasional” MD
9. Oru Naalil Vazhkai from Puthupettai – Dhanush’s relaunch may have misfired, but Yuvan did a god work of the songs and the BGM. This was the pick of the album, sung ballad-like by Yuvan himself
10. Meiyai naan varuven from the movie Ippadikku Kaadhaludan Seenu – don’t know of the movie or the actors, but came across this song on the net. Sung by the versatile Ranjith (most of them are versatile these days, anyway!) and set on the same lines as the classical Bantureeti, a real soft listen.
11. Kaatru Vandhu from Ganapathi Vandhachu – now don’t ask me how do u list these. Chanced upon this song on TV. A real seductive number, something on the lines of Sabesh Murali’s Yedho Minnal from Aayiram Poi Solli.
12. Vizhigal Rendu from Thirudi – A real unsung MD, Bharani scores the music fr this song. A soft number, a must repeat listen. Also, innovative lyrics like "mesmerisa kangal" make it a must listen!
13. Eureka from Thoovanam – With music by a new MD, Isaac Thomas (New as far as Tamil film music is concerned), this song has Harish Raghavendra crooning. A short but soothing number.
14. Pudichirukku from Nenjirukkum Varai – A Bombay Jayashree Number, this one has Sabesh Murali keeping everything to the minimum – the voices and the orchestration. The “yeno yeno” part is real good.
15. Vizhigalil and Kannukul yedho from Thiruvilayadal Aarambam – Imman has not fulfilled the promise he showed, but this is one of his flashes of brilliance. Soft numbers both
